Browser color grading tools that run without a GPU

Browser based color grading with no GPU: what Luttie, fylm.ai, ColorToy, Higgsfield, Dehancer and Flixier each process, output and cost.

Yes, you can color grade in a browser on a machine with no dedicated GPU, and several of the tools that do it are free. Luttie, fylm.ai and ColorToy grade a single frame and hand you a LUT file. Higgsfield and Dehancer Online put looks on photographs. Flixier is a browser video editor with color sliders attached to its timeline. Streaming a real workstation into a tab is a fifth route that works and rarely gets mentioned. None of those are the same job, and a tool from the wrong group will waste your afternoon regardless of how good it is.

That mismatch is most of what goes wrong here. Someone searches for browser color grading, opens the first result, learns its controls, and finishes holding a .cube file when what they wanted was a graded video. The tool worked correctly. The category was wrong.

Four groups, not one category

Browser color tools sort into four groups by what comes out the other end, and the output decides whether a tool fits your job.

Frame graders let you grade one still and export a LUT you apply somewhere else. Luttie, fylm.ai and ColorToy sit here. Your footage never enters them.

Still and film look apps grade a photograph and return a photograph. Higgsfield Color Grading and Dehancer Online sit here, and they suit single images rather than anyone with a timeline.

Browser editors with color attached are video editors first. Flixier sits here: a timeline, cuts, titles and a rendered export, with correction sliders rather than a grading suite.

Timeline graders take a cut video and give back a graded video. Leumos sits here, in closed beta, and the shipping browser options in this group are thin. People who conclude browser grading does not work usually mean that group four is nearly empty.

The fifth answer is not a browser tool. Services like Vagon run a full Windows workstation in a data centre and stream its screen to your tab, so you can run DaVinci Resolve on a laptop that could never install it. For many people asking about browser grading, that is the correct answer.

The question comes up more this year because color.io shut down on 31 December 2025 after Apple acquired its developer, and both the apex domain and www now fail to resolve. Where that workflow can go is in our color.io alternative breakdown.

What "no GPU" actually means in a browser

The phrase is wrong in a way that matters. WebGL is a GPU API. Every browser tool that previews a curve as you drag it runs shader code on a GPU, and on most machines that is the integrated graphics built into the processor. So "no GPU" almost always means no discrete card with its own memory, and integrated graphics are adequate for this work.

The reason they cope is arithmetic. A 1080p frame is about two million pixels and a 4K frame about 8.3 million. Applying curves, a few wheels and a 3D LUT to one frame is a single pass over those pixels, which integrated graphics finish in milliseconds. That is why a frame grader feels instant on a five year old laptop.

Video changes it, and the reason is decode rather than color. When a browser plays H.264 or HEVC it hands the stream to the fixed function decoder built into the chip, which is cheap and does not care how weak the rest of the machine is. ProRes, BRAW and most camera raw have no such path. A tool that wants to open them ships its own decoder compiled to WebAssembly, and WebAssembly runs on the CPU with no hardware decode block behind it. Software decoding ProRes on an old dual core is where the tab stalls, and no amount of GPU is involved.

Memory sets the second ceiling. A frame grader holds one decoded frame and a LUT. Anything that scrubs a timeline holds decoded frames ahead of the playhead, and a browser tab has a memory limit a long 4K sequence will hit. That constraint, more than speed, is why nobody has shipped a browser timeline grader that behaves like a desktop one.

The way around all of it is to stop computing locally. Upload the file, do the work on a server, download the result. Your machine only moves bytes, which is why cloud render works on a Chromebook and why the bottleneck becomes upload speed and queue time rather than silicon. Group one: frame graders that export a LUT

These grade a still and give you a file. If you finish in an NLE, this is your group.

Luttie

Luttie processes a still, a frame you scrub to inside an MP4, MOV or WebM, or a raw file from Sony, Canon, Nikon and Fujifilm bodies, reading the EXIF to suggest a matching LUT pack. It outputs .cube at 17 or 33 points, .3dl, and graded images. The toolset is more complete than the price suggests: RGB curves, wheels, HSL secondaries with an eyedropper, LUT presets, custom .cube loading, vignette, grain, halation and bloom. Drop in a reference image and it matches the palette. A text prompt LUT generator and a chat based refinement mode have both appeared since we last looked.

The editor opens without an account, and the free tier covers curves, wheels and HSL with watermarked image export. LUT export, raw, the film effects and the AI grading sit behind Pro: $5.99 for a week pass, $11.99 monthly, or $68.99 once for lifetime, charged in local currency where available.

It is right for anyone who wants a LUT at the end and finishes the cut elsewhere, and it is the cheapest serious way to do that. It is wrong for anyone who needs the video itself graded, because it never touches more than one frame.

fylm.ai

fylm.ai describes itself as an AI powered raw photo editor and LUT creator in the cloud, which is unusually honest positioning. It processes raw stills and images, and exports .cube LUTs alongside XMP profiles for Lightroom and Camera Raw and ICC profiles for Capture One. Custom LUT import and LogC4 export arrived in an earlier update, and NeuralFilmAI joined NeuralToneAI in version 2.1.

There is a free plan. Lite is $7 a month, Pro $15 and Team $30, all billed annually. Lite covers unlimited LUT creation, AI auto correct, color extract and color match. Pro adds the Premiere Pro extension, NeuralToneAI, 10 GB of storage and client sharing, and allows up to five users. Team includes three users and scales to ten.

It is right for a photographer or look developer who wants one grade expressed as a LUT, an XMP and an ICC profile at once, and for anyone who needs a client to sign off. It is wrong for grading a timeline, because it does not have one.

ColorToy

ColorToy is free, needs no account, and does one thing. Drop an .mp4 or a .jpg on the page, grade the frame with WebGL shaders running locally, download a .cube. It is still live, with one real caveat: its HTTPS certificate is not valid, so the site loads over plain http and your browser will warn you or refuse the secure version outright. Nothing is uploaded, which softens the risk without removing it.

It is right for a quick free LUT with no signup. It is wrong for anyone who needs raw support, a saved project, or a site they can trust with a client's footage.

Group two: stills and film looks

These grade a photograph and return a photograph. Useful, and frequently mistaken for video tools.

Higgsfield Color Grading

Higgsfield's color grading app is free with no credits or limits, takes PNG, JPG and WebP, and returns a graded image. Controls cover temperature, exposure, contrast, saturation, highlights, sharpness and film grain, with presets such as Natural, Split Tone and 16mm, and the page advertises a real time WebGL preview. There is no video path and no LUT export.

It is right for one image you want to look cinematic in about a minute. It is wrong for anything that has to match a second shot, because you cannot carry the grade anywhere.

Dehancer Online

Dehancer Online is film emulation in a browser for photos only, accepting jpeg, heic, tiff and dng. It has 86 film presets alongside Dehancer's grain, halation and bloom, free for up to three photos a day. The pricing page does not sell it on its own: the Studio subscription bundling every plugin, Dehancer Desktop, Dehancer iOS and Dehancer Online is $49 a month billed at $588 a year.

Everything else Dehancer makes is a plugin needing a host application, so it is not a browser answer. The online version is right for a photographer who wants the film look on a few images without installing anything. It is wrong for video, and the three a day limit makes it wrong for volume.

Group three: browser editors with color attached

Flixier

Flixier is a genuine browser video editor with a timeline, and it renders in the cloud, which is what lets a slow machine export quickly. Its own help documentation describes the color tab as basic adjustments for brightness, vibrance, contrast, saturation and hue rotation, with an advanced menu for red, green and blue gamma and a blend color, plus filter presets. That list does not include LUT import or any log to Rec.709 conversion.

The absence decides who it suits. Correcting a slightly dark, slightly flat clip is well within those sliders. Normalizing log footage is not, because normalizing means applying the correct conversion for the camera's log curve and gamut, and per channel gamma is not that conversion. If you shoot S-Log3, V-Log or N-Log, the washed out look will stay. Flixier has a free tier with a monthly export allowance and paid seats above it, priced per seat and rendered in your local currency. It is right for someone who needs to cut and publish a video from a browser and wants the color roughly right. It is wrong for anyone whose source is log or raw.

Group four: timeline graders that return rendered video

Leumos AI

Leumos is in closed beta, which means you cannot use it today, and nothing below is a recommendation over the tools above. If you have a deadline this week, use Luttie or fylm.ai for a LUT and grade in your editor, or stream a workstation and use Resolve. This entry exists so the category map is complete, not to sell you something you cannot buy.

What it does: you upload a finished edit, it detects the scene cuts, and it grades every shot toward a reference image you supply, with ACES based input transforms doing the normalization per source. It renders 4K ProRes or H.265 in the cloud and returns graded video files, with no install and no GPU on your side.

The limits matter as much as the features. It returns rendered files rather than grade data, so there is no LUT, no XML and no CDL to hand a colorist or round trip into Resolve. It is not a raw debayer engine, and it inherits the upload and queue time that come with server side rendering.

It is right for someone with a multi shot edit who wants consistent color without learning a grading application and is happy to receive finished files. It is wrong for a colorist who needs the work to leave as data, for raw workflows, and for anyone who needs it this month. The fifth option: stream a real workstation

Vagon, Shadow and similar services rent you a machine in a data centre and stream its screen to your browser. You install DaVinci Resolve on it, or Premiere, and work at whatever speed the rented hardware runs at. Your laptop is a monitor and a keyboard.

Vagon charges by the minute rather than by subscription. GPU accelerated tiers start at $0.99 an hour for a Tesla T4 class machine and $1.67 an hour for the newer A10G class, rising to $11.97 at the top, with storage as a separate monthly plan from $7.99 for 75 GB.

This is right for anyone who needs the real application without the hardware, especially a short intense job where a few hours of rental beats buying a computer. It is also the only route here with full nodal grading, tracking and noise reduction. It is wrong as a permanent habit, because the meter runs while you are thinking, and wrong on unreliable internet, because latency is the whole experience. Picking by the job in front of you

If you want a LUT to apply in Resolve, Premiere or Final Cut, grade one representative frame in Luttie, fylm.ai or ColorToy, export it, then apply it across the cut in your editor. Flixier will get a finished video out of a browser as long as the footage is already close to correct. For a full grade on a real timeline today, rent a workstation. That is the honest answer, and it is not a browser tool.

Settle one thing before choosing any of them: how many separate grades the job actually needs. Work that looks like forty individual grades is often one normalization, one balance pass and one look, which changes the group you need. Frequently asked questions

Can I color grade in a browser without a graphics card?

Yes. Browser grading tools use WebGL, which runs on the integrated graphics built into almost every processor made in the last decade, and one frame is a small enough job to finish there in milliseconds. What strains a weak machine is decoding video the browser has no hardware decoder for, such as ProRes or camera raw, because that falls back to software decoding on the CPU. Tools that grade a single still avoid the problem, and tools that render on a server move it off your machine.

What is the best free browser color grading tool?

For a LUT, ColorToy is free with no account, though its HTTPS certificate is invalid so you have to load it over plain http. Luttie's editor is free with watermarked image export, and LUT export and raw sit behind Pro. For a single photograph, Higgsfield's app is free with no limits, and Dehancer Online gives three free photos a day with 86 film emulations.

Is there a browser tool that grades a whole video timeline?

Not the way a desktop grading application does. Flixier gives you a timeline with basic color sliders and cloud rendering, but no LUT import and no log conversion. Leumos is building a browser tool that takes a cut edit and returns graded video files, and it is in closed beta and not available yet. The practical routes today are to build a LUT in a browser and apply it in your editor, or to stream a real workstation.

What replaced color.io after it shut down?

Nothing replaced it as a single product. color.io shut down on 31 December 2025 after Apple acquired its developer, and its domain no longer resolves. Luttie, fylm.ai and ColorToy cover the LUT creation half of that workflow, and fylm.ai's Pro and Team plans are closest on collaboration and review. If you used it to grade video directly, the substitute is a desktop application or a streamed workstation.

Why does my log footage still look flat in a browser editor?

Because the editor has no log conversion. Normalizing log footage means applying the transform that matches your camera's log curve and gamut, and brightness, contrast and per channel gamma sliders are not that transform. Flixier's color panel has no LUT import, so S-Log3 or V-Log stays flat no matter how far you push contrast. Use a tool that accepts a conversion LUT, or normalize in your editor first and use the browser tool only for the look on top.
